IMF Calls for Tighter Bitcoin Regulations in El Salvador Amid Loan Negotiations

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urging El Salvador to narrow its Bitcoin law and strengthen oversight as part of ongoing loan negotiations. During discussions in Washington, IMF Director of Communications Julie Kozack stressed the need for a more limited scope of the country's Bitcoin adoption and stronger regulatory measures within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

The talks, centered on improving economic governance and public finances, come as El Salvador seeks a new lending program. The IMF has expressed concerns about the financial risks posed by Bitcoin’s volatility and its potential impact on the country's economic stability.

El Salvador, which made history in 2021 by becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, has experienced mixed reactions to the move. While the nation has seen notable achievements, including a 10% GDP growth and a significant drop in crime, the IMF remains cautious about the long-term financial risks of Bitcoin.

In parallel with these talks, El Salvador has proposed its 2025 budget, a move Kozack described as a step toward fiscal responsibility. The proposal emphasizes spending controls and governance reforms to strengthen the country's finances.

Despite the IMF's concerns, El Salvador’s government, led by President Nayib Bukele, continues to defend its Bitcoin experiment. Supporters like VanEck’s head of digital assets research, Mathew Sigel, have praised Bukele’s efforts, citing increased GDP, a 95% drop in the murder rate, and a booming tourism industry as evidence of Bitcoin’s positive impact.

However, the IMF has made it clear that addressing the risks associated with Bitcoin will be crucial in securing any future lending programs, ensuring that crypto regulation remains a key focus in its ongoing dialogue with El Salvador.
