India Joins Forces with Google and Meta to Combat Crypto Scams

India has intensified its crackdown on cryptocurrency scams, partnering with tech giants Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) to address the escalating threat of fraudulent schemes. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ 2024 annual report, this collaborative effort aims to curb the rising prevalence of "pig butchering" scams, which have caused significant financial losses, particularly among vulnerable populations.

The Growing Threat of "Pig Butchering"

These scams, named for their exploitative nature, involve fraudsters posing as financial advisors or representatives of legitimate investment firms. They manipulate victims—often unemployed youth, students, housewives, and those in financial distress—by building trust and promising high returns on cryptocurrency investments. Once the victims are convinced, they are persuaded to transfer substantial sums into fraudulent schemes.

The Ministry reports that such scams, typically propagated via social media platforms and search engines, have cost investors over $3.6 billion in 2024 alone. Fraudsters exploit Google’s ad services and Meta’s sponsored ads to launch phishing campaigns and promote malicious applications.

Collaborative Efforts to Combat Scams

India’s Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is spearheading the initiative, working closely with Google and Meta to detect and disrupt scam operations. Key measures include:

  • Ad and Content Monitoring: I4C collaborates with Google to identify phishing advertisers, enabling swift removal of deceptive ads and account suspensions. Meta aids by dismantling scam-related pages and flagged lending apps.
  • Real-Time Fraud Prevention: Google Pay is now integrated into the Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), allowing authorities to intercept fraudulent transactions, trace funds, and freeze assets. This system saved over ₹16 billion ($193 million) and assisted more than 575,000 victims in 2023.

Enhancing Investigative Capabilities

The government is investing in specialized training programs to equip law enforcement with skills in blockchain analysis, cryptocurrency tracing, and digital forensics. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) continues to serve as a key platform for citizens to report scams, ensuring faster response times.

Broader Cybersecurity Initiatives

India’s efforts extend beyond crypto scams, with the establishment of the National Counter Ransomware Task Force. This body collaborates with financial institutions, payment platforms, and cryptocurrency exchanges to address large-scale cyber threats.

On the global stage, India is actively engaging with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to develop and enforce international standards for combating money laundering and terrorism financing via cryptocurrencies. This cooperation underscores the need for a united front against the transnational nature of crypto-related crimes.

By leveraging partnerships with leading technology firms and enhancing domestic and international coordination, India is making significant strides in its fight against cryptocurrency fraud.
